Shielding advice for vulnerable patients through the pandemic

The Inaugural Meeting was attended by a range of patient groups and charities including Fight Bladder Cancer UK, Kidney Care UK, the Sickle Cell Society, Cancer 52, the British Lunch Foundation, the Multiple Sclerosis Society, and the Cystic Fibrosis Trust. Virendra Sharma MP welcomed guests to the meeting and highlighted the rationale behind the new APPG, noting delays in diagnosis and treatment, the varying advice in shielding, and the testimony of patient groups through shielding. Professor Isabel Oliver from Public Health England provided a fascinating presentation which included reflections on PHE's development of shielding advice in March, noting the early recognition of the importance of rapidly developing advice for vulnerable groups.

Angela Brook of the patient group Pseudomyxoma Survivor then provided a patient testimony, noting that her members reported confusion around the inconsistency in the issuing of shielding advice letters, though advice issued was clear once people were on the shielding list.

The event concluded with the election of officers and the commitment from all parliamentary officers and APPG supporters to work together over the year ahead on key issues affecting vulnerable groups during the ongoing pandemic, and to learn the lessons to ensure the UK is prepared for future pandemics.
